What is counselling?
Every year, thousands of people seek help through counselling to deal with a difficulty in their lives. They may be grieving over the death of a loved one, not getting on with their partner, have lost their job or be worrying about coping with a new one. They may be finding the strain of work too much, anxious about the children or their parents, struggling with change or simply depressed for no obvious reason. Whatever the motive for seeking support, the person is struggling to cope with life and wants to do something about it.
Counselling is private and confidential. Counsellors are professionally trained to support people and to help them become more successful in coping with their lives. They have the knowledge, skills and experience to provide focused psychological and emotional support. They can provide useful understanding and insightful expertise to support the individual in dealing with the difficulty.
What about confidentiality?
The counselling service is entirely confidential. Any personal information about anyone who uses the scheme is retained by the service co-ordinator and is not made available to anyone within your organisation. From time to time, as part of the ongoing monitoring and evaluation processes of the service, limited statistical information about the uptake of the service is made available to the organisation. This does not in any way compromise the privacy or identity of any member of staff who has used the service.
Where does the counselling take place?
Counselling normally takes place in the private counselling room of the counsellor. Every effort is made to ensure that the person receiving counselling can be put in touch with a counsellor within an easy travelling distance either from work or home.
How long does it take to get an appointment with a counsellor?
In almost every instance, meetings with a counsellor are arranged within hours of a call being received. The actual meeting will be given priority and will normally take place as soon as possible thereafter to accommodate the diaries of the caller and the counsellor.
